CHUSEOK, South Korea’s Harvest Moon Festival of Plenty
One of South Korea’s Major Four Holidays

CheongdaeTimes Newspaper Regular reporter Min Jung Eun

For this year, August 15th of the lunar calendar, which is October 6th of this year, is Chuseok, one of the great holidays in Korea. In terms of holiday days, a week-long holiday is celebrated in conjunction with National Foundation Day on October 3 and Hangul Day on October 9. During this period, I think it will be an opportunity for many people to take a break from their busy daily lives and spend time with their families and rest, and recharge.  To spend the upcoming holidays more meaningfully, I would like to suggest that you learn about Chuseok.

CHUSEOK, Korea’s national holiday

Chuseok is not just a holiday, but a holiday with deep history and culture of our people. The tradition of thanking the harvest and honoring ancestors on the occasion of the brightest moon on August 15 of the lunar calendar has been around for a long time. Its origin can be found in the Silla's 'Gabe' custom. The customs in which women competed in weaving and hung out together symbolized community harmony. Throughout the Goryeo and Joseon periods,  Chuseok became a representative holiday that combines harvest rituals, ancestral rites, and folk games in earnest. Therefore, Chuseok can be said to be a holiday that contains the collective aspirations of our people who wish for the well-being and abundance of the community beyond just individual anniversaries.  In addition, Chuseok is also a day when Confucian ritual culture and indigenous faith are fused. Looking at the full moon, customs to pray for abundance and prosperity, and ancestor worship through graves and ancestral rites are combined. Although the meaning of agriculture has faded in modern society, we still hold the value of Chuseok, which is rich and harmonious, as family members and relatives gather and share affection. After all, Chuseok is an important holiday that reminds us of our roots and solidarity beyond the traditions of the past. Although the current Chuseok may have changed over time, it should not be forgotten that you can spend precious time with your family.

The Custom of CHUSEOK (traditional games, food, culture, etc.)

Above all, the core of Chuseok is rituals and graves. Ritual performance and visiting the graves of ancestors were not just rituals, but also checking the roots of the family and blood ties. Songpyeon, taro soup, and fresh fruit were shared by the family with the joy of the harvest and gratitude. The laughter of the family members who gathered while making songpyeon shows the sentiment of Chuseok, which symbolizes abundance and harmony. In addition, folk games such as Gang-gang-sullae, ssireum, and tug-of-war were an important medium for the villagers to hang out together and strengthen community ties. Not only the size of the community, but also the preparation of the food given to the ancestors throughout the year's harvests, and the hearts of many people, including strengthening family ties, appreciation for food, and family health, were contained. However, as times have changed, the appearance of Chuseok has also changed. With urbanization and nuclear familyization, the landscape of enjoying the graves and folk games on a large scale is gradually decreasing. Instead, it is common for families to gather and have a simple memorial service, or to set the table with modern food instead of songpyeon. The play culture has generally disappeared, but it has been recreated at festivals and cultural heritage events in some regions, gaining a new meaning. Recently, an increasing number of families are spending Chuseok by taking advantage of long holidays to travel or enjoy leisure time. Nevertheless, Chuseok is still a time when tradition and modernity meet. People who visit their hometowns, meals that families share, and feelings of gratitude for their ancestors are not much different from before. Despite the changes, Chuseok remains an important holiday that connects the original meaning of abundance, sharing, roots, and solidarity, and reminds us of our people's identity.

Similar holidays like Chuseok in neighboring countries. The countries that harvest grain on autumn days and celebrate it are the same, not only in Korea, but also in the world, with different names. Therefore, let's look at some countries that have close relations with Korea.Thanksgiving Day. In the United States Thanksgiving, a representative holiday in the United States, is observed on the fourth Thursday of November every year. It originated from when English Puritan immigrants settled in the New World in 1621 and shared a table with indigenous people for the first harvest. This incident, which was to thank the indigenous people for helping them survive in harsh environments and to wish God a good harvest, is said to be an important scene in the founding myth of the United States. The symbol of Thanksgiving can be said to be a dinner. Turkey, cranberry sauce, potato dishes, and pumpkin pie traditionally fill the table. Turkey's cooking is especially representative, giving birth to the nickname "Turkey Day." On this day, families gather together to share meals and reflect on the meaning of gratitude. Today's Thanksgiving Day goes beyond just religion to show American family culture and consumption culture. Right after the holiday, a large-scale Black Friday discount event is held, and Thanksgiving becomes the starting point of the biggest shopping season in the United States. Also, the traditional event where the president 'pardons' a turkey at the White House has become a familiar scene to the public. As such, Thanksgiving is a holiday that captures historical origin, family solidarity, and economic vitality in American society. If Chuseok in Korea values the meaning of ancestor worship and harvest, Thanksgiving is another form of "festival of abundance" that reveals religious appreciation and family-centered culture.  The Mid-Autumn Festival, in China,  which falls on the 15th day of the lunar calendar, is one of the three major Chinese holidays, along with the Chinese New Year and Dano Festival, similar to Korea's Chuseok. Among the lunar months of 7, 8, and September, which fall in autumn, August is in the middle of autumn, and the 15th is the middle of August, so it was called the Mid-Autumn Festival, which means the middle of autumn. In China, an agricultural society, people believed that the five grains were abundant because the moon turned into soft moonlight and blessed the human world. So, a rite of gratitude was held toward the full moon in August, which is the brightest, largest, and roundest. China's Mid-Autumn Festival is the same as Korea’s, where the whole family gets together and eats a variety of foods. Among many foods, the habit of eating moon cakes is an indispensable custom during the Mid-Autumn Festival. This is also related to the moon. Mooncakes, which have been sacrificed to the moon in the past, have slightly different shapes depending on the region. Most of them are circular like a full moon, and sometimes are gently trimmed squares. This is meant to pray for the smoothness and unity of the family by wishing for the shape of a full round moon. As such, the Mid-Autumn Festival is a country that has grown with an agricultural society as a foothold, like Korea, it can be said to be a similar form of "festival of abundance" that contains the meaning of harvest and abundance of crops.
