The moments captured in the sound of the shutter came together in one place for a special exhibition. On September 5, our school's Photography and Arts Research Club hosted its third fair this year, and I had the opportunity to cover the event firsthand. This fair was not merely an exhibition of works; it was a space for each club member to share their unique perspective of the world. The photographs that adorned the walls featured landscapes of light and shadow, as well as fleeting moments from everyday life, all captured in striking black-and-white images that captivated the attention of the audience, comprised of fellow club members.

 

The Photography and Arts Research Society Club is a central club at Cheongju University, established in 1977, and it has a history of 49 years as of 2025. The club primarily uses film cameras and developing and printing equipment to capture black-and-white film photographs, which are collected each year for exhibitions.

Ahn Sung-hee, the president of the club, stated, "We hold club exhibitions at the end of each semester. We mainly shoot black-and-white film, and we develop and print the photos ourselves. This allows us to share feedback on our photography and printing work through each exhibition, helping us improve our skills. During the exhibition, we also hold a general critique session attended by alumni who have graduated from the club."

The Photo Art Research Society's exhibition commenced at 7:30 PM in the club room of the University Cultural Center. Four black-and-white photographs were initially displayed in the exhibition hall, and the club members took turns standing in front of their works to explain the shooting process and their artistic intentions. After each presentation, a lively question-and-answer session followed, creating an engaging platform for discussions about the artworks and camera operation techniques. Although the presenters appeared somewhat nervous at the beginning, they became deeply serious when articulating the meanings behind their works, revealing their genuine affection for their creations. The audience listened attentively to the presenter's explanation and resonated with the story within the work. This process, which intertwined presentation and appreciation, created a remarkable atmosphere at the Photography and Art Research Society's exhibition.

 

Among the members of the Photography and Arts Research Council, Hansol Jang, a student from the Department of Medical Management, Class of 2024, was asked how he came to join the club. He said, "I have always enjoyed taking pictures, but I found it burdensome to buy a camera. Then I learned that the club allows members to freely take photos with a film camera, so I decided to join." Reflecting on a piece that was not his own, he remarked, "I was particularly impressed by Hyun Bin Hwang's work. The calm waves and the image of two people sitting in a boat on those waves conveyed a sense of tranquility to the viewer." When asked about the challenges of film photography, Hansol-jang said, "I find it difficult to determine the right filter and exposure time for the film. However, I believe the allure of film photography lies in the fact that artists can create their works by hand, and the anticipation of not knowing the outcome until the film is developed adds to its charm.“

This work is said to have been captured as a color photograph from the Cheongju Myeongam Reservoir Bridge using a Sony Alpha 7C camera. Chairman Sunghee Ahn stated, 'I wanted to capture this image in a peaceful atmosphere.'

"However, it is unfortunate that the duck on the right side of this piece was cut off, and it was challenging to capture the moment without cutting it out while the ducks were constantly moving," she shared the hidden story behind this work.

 

When asked about the most impressive moment at the fair, Sunghee Ann said, "I believe the most memorable aspect of this fair was the moment when my classmates, who are currently in their second year, explained the black-and-white photographs they created while working with the printer for the first time, in front of the new students. They must have submitted the photos taken during the club workshop." Additionally, Chairman Sunghee Ahn expressed to the members of the Photography and Art Research Society, "I hope you will find interest and enjoyment in activities such as shooting, developing, and printing black-and-white film. While cameras themselves can be an expensive hobby, products related to film and printing have become increasingly scarce and costly. Therefore, experiencing and enjoying the black-and-white film development and printing, which are the identity and charm of the Photography and Art Research Society, can be quite challenging.“

 

Finally, when asked about the planned activities and goals of the Photographic Art Research Club, he stated, "There will be a street recruitment event hosted by the Central Club from September 17 to September 18, and we are preparing to welcome new members through this event. We kindly ask for the interest of the first-year students of the class of 2025. Additionally, we are scheduled to hold our 48th exhibition from November 13 to November 16. We are working hard to ensure the success of this exhibition and would greatly appreciate the support of the students at Cheongju University."

 

The recent exhibition by our school's Photography and Art Research Club served as a meaningful platform for club members to showcase their skills and learn new perspectives through each other's works. It has evolved beyond a simple photo exhibition into a space where we share our viewpoints and grow together. As we look forward to future club activities, we are excited to see what stories will unfold at the next exhibition, just as the moments captured by the camera shutter resonated with our hearts beyond a single image.

셔터 소리에 담긴 순간들이 한자리에 모여 특별한 품평회가 열렸다.

지난 9월 5일, 우리 학교 사진예술연구회 동아리에서 주최한 품평회가 올해로 3회째 개최하여 그 현장을 직접 취재했다. 이번 품평회는 단순히 작품을 나열하는 행사가 아니라, 동아리 단원들 각자가 바라본 세상을 공유하는 자리였다. 벽면을 채운 사진 속에는 빛과 그림자가 어우러진 풍경, 일상 속 스쳐 지나간 장면들이 흑백사진으로 담겨 동아리 단원인 청중들의 눈길을 끌었다.

 

사진예술연구회 동아리는 1977년 설립되어 2025년까지 올해로 49년의 역사를 가진 청주대학교의 중앙동아리이다. 필름 카메라와 현상, 인화 기기를 주로 사용하여 흑백필름 사진을 찍고, 매해 이런 사진들을 모아 전시회도 진행하고 있다.

이 동아리 회장인 안성희 학생은 “저희는 매년 학기 말 동아리 전시회를 열어요. 흑백필름을 주로 촬영하고, 직접 현상, 인화까지 진행하고 있어서 매번 품평회를 통해 각자 찍은 사진과 인화 작업의 피드백을 공유하여 더 나은 사진 작업에 도움을 줍니다. 전시회 중에는 동아리를 졸업하신 선배님들께서 참석하는 총 품평회도 진행됩니다.”라고 전했다.

사진예술연구회 이번 품평회는 대학문화관 동아리방에서 오후 7시 30분에 시작되었다. 전시장에는 먼저 네 점의 흑백사진이 전시되어 있었으며, 동아리 단원들은 차례대로 자신의 작품 앞에 서서 촬영 과정과 담고자 한 의도를 설명했다. 발표가 끝날 때마다 자유로운 질의응답이 이어져, 작품에 대한 궁금증이나 카메라 조작법 등의 이야기가 오가며 활발한 소통의 장이 마련되었다. 발표자들은 다소 긴장한 모습으로 시작했지만, 작품에 담긴 의미를 풀어낼 때는 누구보다 진지했고 자신의 작품에 대한 애정을 드러냈다. 청중들 또한 발표자의 설명에 귀 기울이며 작품 속 이야기를 함께 공감했고, 발표와 감상이 어우러진 이 과정은 사진예술연구회 품평회에의 특별한 분위기를 만들어내 매우 인상 깊었다.

 

사진예술연구회 동아리 단원 중 의료경영학과 24학번 장한솔 학생에게 이 동아리를 들어오게 된 계기를 물었다. “평소 사진 찍는 것을 좋아하는데 카메라를 사기에는 부담스러웠습니다. 그러던 중 동아리에서 필름카메라로 자유롭게 사진을 찍을 수 있다고 하여 이 동아리에 들어가게 되었습니다.”라고 전했다. 또, 자신의 작품이 아닌 다른 작품을 보며, “황현빈 학우의 작품이 인상 깊었습니다. 잔잔한 물결과 그 물결 위 보트에 두 사람이 앉아있는 작품이 보는 사람에게 평온한 느낌을 준다고 느꼈기 때문입니다.”라며 다른 학우의 작품 소감을 밝혔다.

필름 사진 작업에서 어려운 점도 묻자, 장한솔 학생은 “ 필름에 어울리는 필터와 노출 시간을 찾는 것이 어렵게 느껴집니다. 그렇지만, 필름 사진 작업에서 느끼는 매력은 작업자 자신의 손으로 작품을 만들어 낼 수 있다는 점과 약품에 넣기 전까지는 결과를 알 수 없기에 어떻게 나올까? 하는 기대를 품게 되는 것이 매력적이라고 생각합니다.”라며 필름 사진의 특별함을 전했다.

이 작품은 컬러 사진으로 청주 명암저수지 다리에서 소니 알파 7C 카메라로 찍었다고 한다. 안성희 회장은 “이 사진은 평화로운 분위기로 찍고 싶었습니다. 그렇지만, 이 작품 오른쪽에 있는 오리가 잘린 것이 아쉽고 오리들이 계속 움직이는 상황에 잘리지 않게 찍는 것이 어려웠습니다.”라며 이 작품의 숨겨진 이야기를 전했다.

 

이번 품평회에서 가장 인상 깊었던 순간에 대해 묻자, 안성희 회장은 이렇게 말했다. “이번 품평회에서 기억에 남는 점은 아무래도 현재 2학년인 제 동기들이 처음 인화기로 작업해본 흑백사진을 신입생들 앞에서 설명하는 순간일 것 같아요. 동아리 워크숍에서 찍은 사진을 품평회에 제출한 일도 있겠네요.”라고 전했다. 또한, 안성희 회장이 사진예술연구회 동아리원들에게 “흑백필름 촬영, 현상, 인화와 같은 일에 흥미와 재미를 가졌으면 좋겠어요. 카메라 자체가 비싼 취미이기도 하지만, 특히 필름과 인화와 관련된 제품들은 날이 갈수록 생산량이 적어지고, 비용도 비싸져서 밖에서 직접 현상, 인화 경험을 한다는 것은 어려운 일이에요. 사진예술연구회의 정체성이자 매력인 흑백필름 현상, 인화를 경험하고 즐거움을 느끼면 좋겠습니다.”라며 동아리원들에게 뜻깊은 의미를 전했다.

마지막으로 사진예술연구회 동아리의 앞으로 계획된 활동이나 목표를 묻자, “9/17~9/18에는 중앙동아리에서 개최하는 동아리 가두모집 행사가 있어서, 사진예술연구회도 이를 통해 신입 부원을 맞을 준비를 하고 있습니다. 25학번 1학년 학우들의 많은 관심 부탁드립니다. 또한, 11/13~11/16까지 사진예술연구회 제48회 전시회가 있을 예정입니다. 이번 전시회를 무사히 마치는 것을 목표로 삼아 열심히 준비하고 있으니, 청주대학교 학우들의 많은 관심 부탁드립니다.”라며 계획된 활동들을 전했다.

 

우리 학교 사진예술연구회 동아리 이번 품평회는 동아리원들이 그간 갈고닦은 실력을 선보이는 무대이자, 서로의 작품을 통해 새로운 시각을 배우는 의미있는 자리였다. 단순한 사진 전시를 넘어 서로의 시선을 공유하며 함께 성장하는 장이 된 만큼, 앞으로도 동아리 활동은 카메라 셔터에 담긴 순간들이 한 장의 사진을 넘어 마음을 울린 이번 자리처럼 다음 품평회에서는 어떤 이야기가 펼쳐질지 기대가 된다.
