Our University English Language and Literature Student Serves as Staff Member at UNESCO International Conference

Students from the Department of English Language and Literature at our university participated as staff members at the UNESCO International Conference held over two days, from May 27 to 28, 2025, contributing to the smooth operation of the international event.

The conference was co-hosted by UNESCO, the Government of Timor-Leste, and the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), focusing on the theme of “Documentary Heritage and the Role of Memory.” It aimed to explore ways to resolve conflicts and sustainable peacebuilding in the Southeast Asian region.

Centered around the theme “Memory, Records, and Healing,” the conference brought together organizations such as the Commission for Reception, Truth and Reconciliation (CAVR) of Timor-Leste, the Jeju April 3rd Peace Foundation, the May 18 Memorial Foundation in Gwangju, as well as experts from the ASEAN region and representatives from international organizations. They explored how memory institutions and history education can contribute to social integration and peace.

Participants shared case studies from their respective countries, engaging in a robust discussion on how to memorialize and educate about recurring historical violence and conflicts in Asia. Furthermore, they explored methods to ensure that these historical records effectively contribute to the restoration of human rights, social cohesion, and the building of sustainable peace.

Students from the Department of English Language and Literature at our university volunteered as operations staff for this event, performing a variety of practical tasks. These included assisting with overall conference operations, guiding participants, and supporting multilingual communication. Given the international nature of the event, effective communication with multinational participants was especially important. The students demonstrated both professionalism and strong communication skills on-site, drawing on the English proficiency they had developed through their studies.

Furthermore, this conference was especially meaningful as it went beyond simple interpretation support or event guidance—it provided students with the valuable opportunity to directly experience a global forum and connect their academic knowledge to real-world practice.

According to the department, this initiative is designed to provide students with an opportunity to cultivate practical English communication skills and a global perspective, as well as gain hands-on social practice experience related to their major field of study. The Department of English Language and Literature at our university goes beyond basic language education, pursuing an educational approach that emphasizes the value of communication, understanding, and intercultural exchange through language.

In particular, a special exhibition was set up at the conference venue to introduce Korea’s UNESCO Memory of the World heritage. It showcased the historical and cultural significance of major Korean documentary legacies such as the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, the Hunminjeongeum, and the May 18 Democratization Movement Records to international participants.

In addition, traditional Korean tea and snacks, along with coffee, were served to international participants, making the space a special setting where they could experience Korean hospitality and culture. More than just a place to rest, this area served as a venue for cultural exchange, adding depth and meaning to the event.

Kim Su-yeon, a student from the Department of English Language and Literature who participated as a staff member at the conference, said, “I applied for this opportunity with the hope of lowering my psychological barriers to English by frequently using the language in real-life settings and experiencing a variety of international accents while assisting at the international conference. However, I was also able to learn unexpected lessons about social interactions, beyond just the linguistic aspects.

As someone aiming to work in an English-speaking service field, this international conference was a valuable experience that allowed me to communicate directly with people from various countries. Through this experience, I was able to further develop my cultural sensitivity and communication skills, and it also strengthened my confidence in pursuing a job in a global, English-centered environment.”

Lee So-jung, the coordinator in charge of the UNESCO International conference, stated, “Unlike typical information-delivery formats, this international conference held at the ICDH focused on active participation and discussion among the participants. So, Participants were encouraged to share their own experiences, provide input on cases from other countries, and explore ways to apply these insights to their nations and institutions. To support this, the meeting was structured so that everyone could speak and ask questions freely from an equal footing.

Since all participants in this conference were both speakers and audience members, we focused on creating an environment that encouraged open participation. This was reflected not only in the program design but also in the layout and overall operation of the venue.”

She also stated, “Peace and reconciliation have been topics of discussion for a very long time. However, we are still discussing them today, and they remain goals that we must achieve through collective effort. This international conference was held under the theme. “Memory of the World for Conflict Resolution and Peacebuilding.

As the conference aimed to explore how each country builds peace and heals wounds through the memories preserved in records—and how to safeguard and pass them on to future generations—I hope it will serve as a small yet meaningful step toward our shared goals of ‘peace’ and ‘harmony,’ ultimately making a positive impact on the international community.” she added.

Lastly, she offered a brief piece of advice to students, “When the time comes for you to lead your project, you’ll need to understand how things work on-site and be able to manage even the smallest tasks thoroughly. That’s why I believe this kind of experience is a great opportunity to get a feel for the flow and atmosphere of real fieldwork. I hope many students consider participating with that mindset.”

This conference holds great significance as it underscores our university's commitment to providing educational opportunities that connect it to the international arena. This commitment fosters an environment where students can actively develop and thrive within the global community. This participation provided students with practical experiences beyond academics, serving as an opportunity to strengthen the social role of a regional university.

The Department of English Language and Literature plans to further expand opportunities for students to gain experience on a global stage through continued collaboration with international events.

우리대학 영어영문학과 유네스코 국제회의 운영요원으로 활약

우리대학 영어영문학과 학생들이 지난 2025년 5월 27일부터 28일까지 이틀간 개최된 유네스코 국제회의에서 운영요원으로 참여해 국제 행사의 원활한 진행을 도왔다. 이번 회의는 유네스코와 동티모르 정부, 한국국제협력단(KOICA) 등이 협력하여 개최한 행사로, ‘기록유산과 기억의 역할’을 통해 동남아시아 지역의 갈등 해소와 지속 가능한 평화 구축 방안을 논의했다.

이번 회의는 ‘기억과 기록, 그리고 치유’라는 주제를 중심으로 동티모르의 국가갈등화해센터(CAVR), 제주 4·3 평화재단, 광주 5·18기록관 등 국내외 평화기록 기관과 아세안 지역 전문가들, 국제기구 관계자들이 참여하여 기억기관과 역사교육이 사회 통합과 평화에 어떻게 기여할 수 있는지를 모색했다.

참가자들은 각국의 사례를 공유하며, 아시아 지역에서 반복되는 역사적 폭력과 갈등을 어떻게 기억하고 교육할 것인지에 대해 진지한 논의를 이어갔다. 나아가 이러한 기억의 기록이 인권 회복과 사회 통합, 평화 구축에 실질적으로 기여할 수 있는 방안을 모색하는 시간이었다.

우리대학 영어영문학과 학생들은 본 행사에 운영요원으로 자원하여 회의 현장의 전반적인 진행 보조, 참가자 안내, 다국어 의사소통 지원 등 다양한 실무 활동을 수행했다. 특히 국제 행사의 특성상 다국적 참가자들과의 의사소통이 중요했던 만큼, 학생들은 평소 갈고닦은 영어 실력을 바탕으로 현장에서 전문성과 소통 능력을 발휘했다. 또한 이번 회의는 단순한 통역 보조나 행사 안내를 넘어, 학생들이 글로벌 담론의 현장을 직접 체험하고, 학문적 지식을 실천으로 연결할 수 있는 기회가 되었기에 더욱 뜻깊었다.

학과 측에 따르면, 이번 참여는 학생들이 실질적 영어 커뮤니케이션 능력을 바탕으로 국제적 감각을 함양하고, 전공과 연계된 사회적 실천 경험을 쌓을 수 있는 기회로 기획되었다. 우리대학 영어영문학과는 단순한 어학 교육을 넘어, 언어를 통한 소통과 이해, 문화 간 교류 가치를 높이는 교육을 지향하고 있다.

특히 이번 회의장 한편에는 한국의 세계기록유산을 소개하는 전시 공간이 마련되어, 해외 참가자들에게 조선왕조실록, 훈민정음, 5·18 민주화운동 기록물 등 한국의 주요 기록유산이 지닌 역사적·문화적 가치를 알렸다. 더불어 외국인 참가자들을 위한 한국식 전통 다과와 커피가 함께 제공되어, 한국의 환대와 문화를 체험할 수 있는 특별한 공간으로 호응을 얻었다. 이 공간은 단순한 휴식처를 넘어, 문화 교류의 장으로 기능하며 행사에 의미를 더했다.

이번 회의에 운영요원으로 참여한 영어영문학과 김수연 학생은 “국제회의에 보조요원으로 참여하며 실제 환경에서 영어를 자주 사용하고 여러 나라의 악센트를 경험하며 영어에 대한 심리적 장벽을 조금이나마 낮출 수 있었으면 하는 바람으로 지원하게 되었습니다. 하지만 언어적인 것들뿐만 아니라 예상치 못했던 사회생활에 대한 것들도 배울 수 있었습니다. 영어를 사용하는 서비스 분야를 목표로 하고 있는 만큼, 이번 국제 회의는 다양한 국가의 사람들과 직접 소통할 수 있는 소중한 경험이었습니다. 이를 통해 문화적 감수성과 의사소통 능력을 더욱 키울 수 있었고, 앞으로 글로벌하고 영어가 중심이 되는 환경에서 일하고자 하는 진로에 대한 확신도 더욱 강해졌습니다” 라고 답하였다.

이번 유네스코 국제회의를 담당했던 이소정 담당자는 “이번 ICDH에서 개최된 국제회의의 경우에는 일반적으로 행해지는 정보전달식 방식을 넘어 참가자들의 적극적인 참여와 토론을 중심으로 이루어지는 방식이었습니다. 참가자들이 자신들의 사례를 공유하고, 타 국가의 사례에 대해 의견을 내고 이를 통해 자신들의 국가 및 기관에 대입하는 방안을 모색하는 자리였는데요. 그래서 모든 참가자가 동등한 위치에서 자유롭게 발언하고 질의를 할 수 있도록 구성하였습니다.

본 회의에 참여하는 모든 참가자들이 연사이자 청중이기에 자유롭게 참여할 수 있도록 프로그램 구성을 비롯하여 행사장 구성, 운영 등에 있어서도 이를 중점으로 고려하여 준비하였습니다” 라고 답하였다.

또한 이소정 담당자는 “평화와 화합은 아주 오래전부터 이야기해온 주제입니다. 하지만 오늘날까지 아직도 이에 관해 이야기하고 있고, 여전히 우리가 공동의 노력을 바탕으로 달성해야 하는 목표이기도 합니다. 이번 국제회의는 ‘갈등 해결과 평화구축을 위한 세계의 기억’이라는 주제로 개최되었습니다. 기록 속에 담겨있는 기억을 매개로 각 국가가 어떻게 자신들의 평화를 구축하고 상처를 치유하고 있는 과정에 관해 이야기하고 앞으로 이를 어떻게 지키고 미래 세대에 전달할지에 대한 메시지를 담은 자리였던 만큼 ‘평화’와 ‘화합’이라는 목표에 다가가는 작은 발걸음으로 자리하기를 바랍니다” 라고 답하며 이번 회의가 국제사회에 긍정적인 영향을 미치길 바란다고 덧붙였다.

마지막으로 “나중에 본인의 프로젝트를 이끌어 가야 하다 보면 현장의 업무도 알아야 하고, 작은 업무도 세세하게 다 챙겨야 하는 만큼, 현장의 흐름과 분위기를 익힐 좋은 기회라고 생각하고 참여하면 좋을 것 같습니다” 라고 학생들에게 짧은 조언을 해주셨다.

이번 회의는 우리대학이 지역 대학으로서 국제 무대와 연결되는 교육 기회를 제공하고, 학생들이 글로벌 사회 속에서 능동적으로 성장할 수 있는 환경을 조성하고 있다는 점에서 큰 의미를 지닌다. 이번 참여는 학생들에게 학문을 넘은 실천적 경험의 기회를 제공함으로써 지역 대학의 사회적 역할을 강화하는 계기를 마련했다. 영어영문학과는 앞으로도 국제적 행사와의 협력을 통해 학생들에게 더욱 넓은 무대에서의 경험 기회를 제공할
