Cheongju University Takes the Lead in Practicing ESG

The current debate on the climate crisis and social responsibility is drawing attention as an important task. A sustainable society and ethical responsibility, emphasized by ESG (Environment, Social, Governance), are no longer the sole responsibility of corporations. As a result, ESG has become a practical and essential task for both schools and students today. As ESG continues to expand as a practical task for both schools and students, Our University has also been actively working to implement ESG values. It was selected as a Green Campus by the Ministry of Environment and the Korea Environment Corporation in 2016 and declared itself a carbon-neutral university in 2022. Additionally, the university does not aim to implement ESG values solely through administrative systems. A key feature of our university is that students voluntarily participate and foster an ESG culture in their daily lives. A prime example of this is the ESG Student Monitoring Group. They play a key role in fostering and promoting a culture of sustainability within the university through creative initiatives. They conduct direct research on environmental, social, and ethical values throughout the campus, propose areas for improvement, and take on the role of driving positive change through small actions. In this way, our university approaches ESG in a way that allows students, as members of the school community, to directly experience and actively practice it. 

In particular, one team from the 3rd cohort of the 2024 ESG Student Monitoring Group carried out a ‘Plastic Bottle Cap Upcycling Campaign,’ where they collected plastic bottle caps, made them into keyrings, and distributed them. Additionally, the remaining bottle caps were delivered to the Cheongju Recycling Center for use in upcycling. This campaign went beyond simply recycling waste; it became a good example of eco-friendly practice by transforming discarded materials into new value.Afterwards, the campaign raised awareness about environmental protection, encouraging active participation and positive responses from many members of the school community. Externally, the impact of the students’ activities expanded, leading to a virtuous cycle within the local community. This year, the ESG Student Monitoring Group plans to continue its active activities, and the small actions of each member are coming together to help our university gradually move toward becoming a more sustainable space. Seonah Park, a 2024 student from the Department of Aviation Services currently participating in the ESG Student Monitoring Group, said, “What stands out to me is the process of investigating the ESG initiatives being carried out on campus. I believe it was a truly meaningful experience that went beyond simply collecting information — we made an effort to understand students’ awareness and opinions through a survey we created ourselves called ‘Green Talk.’” She added that working together with fellow ESG Monitoring Group members to discuss, plan, and put ESG values into practice was a particularly memorable part of the experience. This experience of going beyond simply collecting information related to ESG and making efforts to gather opinions from members of the campus community had a positive impact on the monitoring group. 

Additionally, Dayeon Yang, a 2022 student from the Department of Library and Information Science, shared, “I have noticed through articles and news that companies are establishing dedicated ESG departments and expanding related activities. This change made me realize the importance of ESG and sparked my interest in learning more about it.” She explained that this was her motivation for applying to the 2025 ESG Monitoring Group. She added, “I would be happy if members of our university come to recognize that ESG is present in everyday life and that they can actively practice it through the activities carried out by the 2025 ESG Student Monitoring Group.” She expressed her hope that the university community’s awareness of ESG will be both positive and action-oriented. 

One team from the 4th cohort of the ESG Student Monitoring Group carried out activities in May under the theme “ESG Magnifier,” focusing on identifying existing ESG elements on campus, raising awareness among students, and effectively promoting them.

They focus on positive ESG practices within the campus and aim to contribute to their wider dissemination. The participation of each member of our university goes beyond a simple movement to change the campus; it becomes a driving force that transforms the entire university culture into one that is healthy and responsible. Therefore, it is important to pay closer attention to the activities of the ESG Monitoring Group and to share their significance together. ESG is not just about environmental protection; it represents ethical choices, social responsibility, and a commitment to actions that create a sustainable future together. We hope that both students and staff develop a positive awareness of ESG and grow as active participants in practicing ESG alongside the Monitoring Group, so that together we can build a more sustainable future.

청주대학교, ESG 실천 앞장서다

현재 기후 위기와 사회적 책임에 대한 논의가 중요한 과제로 주목받고 있다. 지속가능한 사회와 윤리적 책임을 강조하는 ESG(Environmental, Social, Governance)가 더 이상 기업만의 과제가 아닌, 학교와 학생 모두의 실천 과제로 확장되고 있다. 이를 기반으로 우리 학교는 2016년 환경부와 한국환경공단이 주관하는 그린 캠퍼스에 선정됐었으며, 2022년에는 ‘탄소 중립 대학’을 선포하는 등 ESG 가치를 실현하기 위해 다양한 노력을 기울이고 있다. 우리 대학은 ESG 가치를 행정적인 시스템으로만 실현하려 하지 않는다. 그 중심에는 우리 학교 학생들이 자발적으로 참여하며 ESG 문화를 만들어 가고 있다. 바로 그 대표적인 사례가 ESG 학생 모니터링단이다. 이들은 우리 학교 내에서 지속가능한 문화를 창의적으로 만들어내고 이끌어가는 주체로 활약하고 있다. 교내 곳곳에서 환경, 사회, 윤리적 가치에 대해 직접 조사하고, 개선점을 제안하며 작은 실천으로 긍정적인 변화를 이끄는 역할을 맡고 있다. 이렇듯 우리 학교는 학교 구성원이 직접 체감하고 실천할 수 있는 방향으로 풀어내고 있다.

특히 지난해에는 플라스틱 페트병 뚜껑을 수거하여 키링으로 제작하여 배포하는 ‘병뚜껑 업사이클링 캠페인’을 진행했다. 남은 병뚜껑은 업사이클링에 활용할 수 있도록 청주 재활용센터에 전달했다. 해당 캠페인은 단순히 쓰레기를 재활용하는 차원을 넘어, 버려지는 자원을 새로운 가치로 되살리는 친환경 실천의 좋은 사례가 되었다. 이후 환경 보호에 대한 관심을 높이며 많은 학교 구성원들의 참여와 호응을 이끌어 냈고, 대외적으로 성과를 확산시켜 학생들의 활동이 지역의 선순환으로까지 이어졌다. 올해도 ESG 학생 모니터링단은 활발히 활동을 진행할 예정이며, 구성원 개개인의 작은 실천들이 모여 우리 학교는 점차 지속가능한 공간으로 나아가고 있다. ESG 학생 모니터링단 활동에 참여중인 항공서비스학과 24학번 박선아 학생은 ‘교내에서 실행되고 있는 ESG 요소들을 조사하는 과정이 기억에 남는다. 단순하게 정보를 수집하는 것을 넘어서, 우리가 직접 만든 설문지 ’그린토크‘를 통해 학생들의 인식과 의견까지 파악하려고 노력했던 점이 정말 뜻깊은 활동이라고 생각된다.’라며 함께 활동하는 ESG모니터링단원들과 고민하고 실행하며 ESG의 가치를 실천하는 과정이 인상깊었던 순간으로 남았다고 밝혔다. 이처럼 정보 수집에서 끝나는 것이 아니라, 교내 구성원들의 의견을 이끌어 내기 위한 노력의 경험은 모니터링단에게 긍정적인 영향을 끼쳤다.

또한, 문헌정보학과 22학번 양다연 학생은 ‘평소 기사와 뉴스를 통해 기업이 ESG 전담 부서를 신설하거나 관련을 활동을 확대해나가는 것을 알 수 있었다. 이러한 변화는 ESG의 중요성을 체감할 수 있었고, ESG에 대해 알아보고 싶었다.’라며 2025학년도 ESG 모니터링단에 지원하게 된 계기를 밝혔다. 이후 ‘2025학년도 ESG 학생 모니터링단이 진행하는 활동을 통해 우리 학교 구성원이 ESG가 일상에 존재하고 있으며, 스스로 실천할 수 있다는 것을 인지하면 기쁠 것 같다.’라며 우리 학교 구성원들이 ESG에 대한 인식을 긍정적이고 실천할 수 있는 것이길 바란다는 소감을 밝혔다.

ESG 학생 모니터링단 중 한 팀은 ‘ESG 돋보기’라는 주제로, 교내에 이미 존재하는 ESG요소들을 발굴해 학생들에게 알리고, 이를 효과적으로 홍보하는 데 중점을 두어 활동해 나갈 예정이다.

이들은 교내의 긍정적인 ESG실천 사례에 대해 주목하고 있으며 확산에 기여하는 것을 목표로 삼고 있다. 우리 학교 구성원 개개인의 참여는 캠퍼스를 변화시키는 단순한 움직임을 넘어 우리 학교 전체의 문화를 건강하고 책임감 있도록 바꾸는 힘이 되고 있다. 따라서 ESG 모니터링단의 활동에 더욱 관심을 기우이고, 그 의미를 함께 공유해 나가는 것이 중요하다. ESG는 환경 보호를 의미하는 것이 아니라 윤리적인 선택, 사회적 책임 그리고 모두가 함께 만들어가는 지속가능한 미래를 위한 실천이자 약속이다. 학생들과 교직원 모두가 ESG에 대한 긍정적인 인식을 가지고 ESG 모니터링단과 함께 실천의 주체로 성장하길 바란다. 우리 모두의 선택이 모여 지속가능한 미래를 만들어 간다는 믿음이 우리 학교 곳곳에 스며들기를 기대한다.
