You may have heard of the second grade of middle school syndrome (chunibyeong), which is well known as the period of teenage angst. The second grade of middle school syndrome is mainly referred to as a time of rebellious or self-centered behavior. They want to escape from their parents and to be recognized as being independent.

Many students may have experienced this syndrome. Unlike when you were in elementary school, you may have felt like you were already grown up and your parents were treating you like a child. Also you would feel like you can do anything when you were with your friends. Some people said it was embarrassing, looking back their middle school period. Whether the past time is embarrassing or not, it is a process of growth.

Then have you heard of the sophomore syndrome? It is college student’s growing pains like teenage angst. However there are some different things. The main symptom of sophomore syndrome is lethargy and depression. College student should take responsibility for their actions as legal adults and find their own careers by themselves. At the start of university, students are free from high school and enjoy being twenty.. However, at the second grade, students start studying their major in earnest. Then gradually they are worried about their future.

The beginning and core of the sophomore syndrome is ‘the anxiety about their future’. Students seriously worry about whether their major fits with their aptitude and where they will work. As the worries increase, students have feelings of doubt about studying, and may lose their will to study, and negative feelings grow.

However this is one of the processes of growth. I think college students are legally adults but also immature students. Sophomore syndrome is kind of growing pains to become a respectable grown-up. Therefore, the people who suffer from the sophomore syndrome are those who strive to grow further.

Anyone who is reading this report now, if you think you have sophomore syndrome, there is something I would like to tell. You want to live your life well and work hard even though you have a lot of worries. You will be able to become a stronger and more mature adult throughout this period. Good luck to you.
