Yangyang-gun Helicopter Crash

The Cheongdae Times cub reporter So-Yeon Kim

On November 27, at 10:50 a.m., a helicopter crashed on a hill near Myeongjusa Temple in Eoseongjeon-ri, Hyeonbuk-myeon, Yangyang-gun, Gangwon-do, killing five people on board.

The helicopter is a medium-sized rental helicopter of the S-58T model for forest fire vulnerability prevention activities. Fire authorities recovered five bodies after extinguishing the fire that occurred after the accident and checking for casualties in the ashes.

During the investigation, the flight plan recorded a total of two pilots and mechanics on board. However, a total of five deaths were found at the scene, including a pilot, a mechanic, a mechanic in charge of gas, and two unidentified women, and a total of five people were also found on board through CCTV at the helicopter's mooring.

The reason why the number of casualties increased to five was because information on three people was missing when reporting the flight plan. The two unreported passengers were identified as women, but the exact identity was not known at the time.

Police asked the National Forensic Service to conduct an emergency DNA test to identify the two women. As a result of the evaluation, it was finally confirmed that the two women in their 50s who died were acquaintances of a helicopter official.

The cause of the accident investigated by the Aviation Railway Accident Committee was presumed to be excessive aging of the helicopter.

The helicopter in the accident was a aged helicopter 47 years old. Even if the helicopter's accessories were exchanged on time and maintained frequently, the safety of the aircraft is suspected.

Rental helicopters, which have been operated by local governments to prevent and extinguish forest fires, have been steadily needed to be replaced over the past few years due to their higher than average machine age.

In response, the Korea Forest Service announced in 2019 that it will gradually replace aging helicopters with the goal of expanding 50 by 2025.

However, according to data received from the Korea Forest Service in May this year, the average length of helicopters leased by local governments nationwide as of March this year is still 35 years.

Action must be taken quickly to prevent any more accidents for safety reasons.
