North Korea Launches IRBM, Passes Over Japan, and Falls into the Pacific Ocean

North Korea launched an intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM, Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile) on Oct. 4. The Joint Chiefs of Staff said that an intermediate-range ballistic missile launched from North Korea's Jagang Island passed over Japan and landed in the Pacific Ocean.

This left many shocked and terrified, with Japan evacuating some residents in Hokkaido for the first time in five years. Later, the U.S. ship Reagan, which left the East Sea last month after the South Korea-U.S. joint drills, returned to the East Sea due to North Korea's mid-range ballistic missile launch.

On Oct. 6, two days after the North fired its missiles, North Korea once again dropped two missiles into Japan's exclusive economic zone. The Defense Ministry believes that the second missile flew at a low altitude and flew in an orbit that was difficult to intercept.

The Japanese government voiced strong criticism of North Korea's unprecedented provocations toward Japan. Japanese Prime Minister Kishida said the ballistic missile launch was “absolutely unacceptable” and ordered efforts to ensure the safety of the Japanese people.
