The 22nd Bucheon International Animation Festival (BIAF), which is headed by Yoon Gap-yong, a professor of cartoon animation at Cheongju University (President Cha Chun-soo), was held for five days from the 23rd to the 27th of October.
The 22nd BIAF organizing committee said it held a press conference and a ceremony to appoint ambassadors at Times Square in Yeongjung-ro, Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul.
Idol singer Lee Na-eun of April was appointed as promotion ambassador on the same day.
Although most film festivals are being held online due to the spread of new Coronavirus infections (Corona 19), major events were held offline at the Korea Cartoon Museum and CGV Bucheon.
This year, 130 animated films from 42 countries were presented.
For the opening film, the feature-length animation "Calamity Jane," which directed the story of Callamity Jane's childhood adventures in a lyrical 2D animation, was selected. It is directed by Remi Saye, who directed "Le Tablo" and "Sasha's Great Adventure in the Arctic."
Including the opening film, "The Sea's Child," "My Favorite War" and "The Lightning: The Beginning" have entered the feature section of the international competition.
A total of 1,389 short films were submitted for the international competition, and the film awarded the grand prize will advance to the U.S. Academy Awards.
This year, a special exhibition in Russia was organized to commemorate the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and Russia. Russian animations such as "To the Universe," "Toilet Love Story" and "At the End of the World" were screened.
Yoon Gap-yong, chairman of the 22nd BIAF organizing committee, said, "This year marks the third year that BIAF has been selected as the first official Academy Film Festival in Korea," adding, "Since it is an international film festival recognized by Academy, we are preparing to satisfy not only domestic audiences but also global moviegoers with high-quality and excellent films."
