 Division of Public Administration and Urban Planning studies how the central government and local governments play their roles in order to meet increasing demands in the changing environment, so called decentralization, globalization, IT and knowledge-based society. In the past, Public Administration and Urban Planning were to solve community problems which had occurred. However, now Public Administration and Urban Planning are managing community problems in advance and keeping them off in advance and offering public services for better quality of life.
 As concentrating on this changing environmental context, the faculty of Division of Public Administration and Urban Planning is pursuing to enhance student's abilities about decision making, planning, implementation, and evaluation of public policies. Through the training and educational programs, students can build up their capability to solve the community problems. In Division of Public Administration and Urban Planning as an applied science, students can learn various models and skills for solving community problems.
 The educational objectives of Division of Public Administration and Urban Planning are as follows.

  1. To educate competent students who can think synthetically and systematically and solve
      the problems for their community.
  2. To educate specialists who can apply rational thinking and scientific theories into the real problems to solve.
  3. To educate professional planners and public officials to respond the local demand appropriately.
Public Administration
Division of Public Administration and Urban Planning

Department of Urban Planning
Goal of the course
 The undergraduate course offers an Bachelor of urban planning major designed to prepare students for careers in both the public and private sectors. The major also provides a foundation for students intending to do graduate work in urban planning, urban design, public policy and development.  The subjects in the major teach students the ways in which the tools of economics, policy analysis, urban planning and design can be brought to bear on critical social and environmental problems in Korea and abroad. In addition, students study the special skills and responsibilities of planners who seek to promote efficient and equitable change.  Students learn how to understand, analyze, and influence the variety of forces-social, economic, cultural, legal, political, ecological, and aesthetic, among others-shaping the built environment. The curriculum comprises urban and environmental policy, planning and design; urban and regional public policy; and urban society, history, and politics.

Land Management
Objectives of education
 The Department of Land Management provides a multidisciplinary approach to the production, financing, marketing, and consumption of real estate products. The Department also places equivalent importance to the tools for managing real estates and the markets: GIS and land surveying techniques.
 The Department offers two degree programs: bachelor of Social Science and Masters of Land Management. Graduate students are required to select their major from the areas of real estate, management and planning of land resources, or land surveying.

 Since sociology is a discipline which deals with more various aspects of the society than any other disciplines in the social science, sociology graduates are engaged in a variety of occupations. Some of the examples of jobs in which sociology graduates gain employment are managers at big companies, government officials, journalists, social researchers, school teachers and police officers.
Political science and diplomacy
Course objective
 The development of world history has been directing towards realization of peaceful coexistence, political democracy and economic prosperity. As a part of the world, Koreans have been striving for deepening democratic consolidation and enhancing economic condition. In addition, Koreans have a historical mission to achieve peaceful unification of the divided nation.
 In order to achieve the missions imposed to Koreans, specifically peaceful unification of the nation in a democratic political system, it is necessary to obtain a scientific knowledge about the internal and external political reality.
 Therefore, the Department of Political Science and Diplomacy teaches students to understand the political reality with theory and practice by offering various subjects such as political theory, comparative politics, international relations, Korean politics, and world area studies, etc. The primary aim of the department is to foster social and political leaders who will lead the future unified Korea.
Department of Sociology
Educational goal
  In a modern society characterized with informationization, pluralism and globalization, it needs more systematic and theoretical ideas and thinking to understand and explain the complexity and various dimensions of social phenomena. The department of sociology in Cheongju University aims to provides students with theoretical and practical knowledge and perspectives based on various sociological explanations and concrete cases, and to help them grasp main features of the complex social structure and mechanisms of dynamic social change. To achieve the aim, the curriculum of the department is organized as follows:

  The Department of Social Welfare offers curricula leading to the bachelor of Social Science and a masters in Social Welfare.  The undergraduate program is designed to prepare social workers to give direct to individuals, families, groups, and communities through a variety of agencies and human service settings, beginning at the professional level. Public Administration
Major in Public Administration
1) the Goals of Educational Program
In modern society, the administrative functions of the central and local governments gradually become more subdivided and specialized in detail due to the development of IT society, the improvement of technology, and the introduction to the system of local self-government. In order to keep up with the trend of the social change, Public Administration should concentrate on educating human resources to be competent managers in the public management and other specific domains. Therefore, the program of Department of Public Administration has focused students to learn and apply such knowledges as policy making, personnel, financing, and organization. With these primary subjects, the course emphasizes on educating expertise, such as local administration, administrative information, regulation, environmental policy, social welfare, and labor administration, which is soaring in the social needs.
Major in Public Administration has its purpose of educating students to be specialists who are equipped with theoretical power and practical skills to solve the problems, especially the uprising demands of policies due to the democratization, radical transformation of economic circumstances, and advancement of industrial society into IT society.
2) Careers after Graduation
Department of Public Administration was founded in 1951, as name of Department of Political Science, and changed its name to Public Administration in 1961. Therefore Department of Public Administration has a long history for more than 40 years. So many alumnus and alumna had occupied many important positions in the public and private sector and until recently passed the National and the Local Higher Civil Service Examination. And many alumnus, after obtaining master's degree and doctoral degree of the graduate program, are teaching in many universities and colleges as faculty members.
Because there must be a part of administration in all of the organizations, every part of society is in need of Public Administration majors. Especially Public Administration majors are employed as public officials through official examinations and this career is recommended.
3) Acquiring a certificate of qualification
Department of Public Administration now grants a certificate of teacher¢¥s license to students completing a course for teaching profession. Acquiring the certificate, the majors are qualified for being a regular teacher in middle or high schools and for admitting graduate schools of education to be a teacher of elementary schools.
Also there are another certificates of qualification that students are able to acquire during their school year as like Policy Analysis & Evaluation Officer, Public Administration Manager and so on. For example, Policy Analysis & Evaluation Officer is authorized as nationally recognized license(MOGAHA 2003-19). And the certificate of qualification is in order to foster a specialist who is able to efficiently and rationally carry out management between the public and private sectors.
